Clean Up Australia Day 2008 - Posso now cleaner!!
Another successful Clean Up Australia Day has passed, and we were pleased with the results - the beach was much cleaner than expected, and the volume of rubbish collected was significantly down on last year. This year we didn’t find a single chair, although the number of bottles/cans (particularly in the dune area) was less than last year but still a concern.
Although rubbish volumes were down, activity in the dunes is still a concern. One of the cleanup group discovered a person in the dunes (working on his tan), and when reminded that the area is patrolled and the planes could be taking photos, indicated he wasn’t fussed and just wanted to get out of the wind. Shortly afterward the same person had moved down to the beach, so it was nice that some notice was taken.
Both the Surf Coast Times and the Geelong Advertiser turned up, and took a few photos, so keep your eye out in the news for articles - The Geelong Advertiser journo was urged to keep an eye on the headline writers, as we expressed our ongoing disappointment with the disparity between the sensationalist headlines and the content of the articles. We’ll wait and see if anything changes this time around.
While we were pleased with the success of the clean up itself, volunteer numbers were fewer than expected which was, well… disappointing!! On a sunny day hundreds of people will turn up and use the beach, yet when it comes to looking after the facilities that we had to fight to keep, help is hard to find. Keeping the beach available for the nudist community is not a certainty in the future, so opportunities like Clean Up Australia Day are a fine chance for you to show you are happy to do your bit. This is true for the other beaches as well - it would be great to have a group organised for Sunnyside, anyone care to volunteer? <*insert sound of crickets chirping...*>
Special thanks goes to Rob who organised the event, his tireless efforts helped save the beach in the past and now helps keep the beach clean for everyone!! And thanks to everyone who came along as well, Posso is that little bit nicer now because of your efforts, and we hope all beach users appreciate that.

My partner and I have just come back from spending a couple of days at Pt Impossible, and we found it by far the easiest access, cleanest, friendliest, most pleasant of the 4 legal beaches around Melbourne. Keep up the good work and keep up the fight; we appreciate your efforts (we are SS regulars).
