Beach Fight Timeline

The following timeline is an attempt to document events relating to the current fight to save Pt Impossible and Southside from the attack on their clothing optional status. If you notice something missing or incorrect, or know of something we need to add, please use the contacts page and let us know!

The timeline has the most recent events first, to make it a bit easier to keep up to date. All date references match actual posts made here on the site, so if you want more detail, check out the actual post that corresponds to the date here in the summary.

  • 20/10 - Surf Coast Shire passes motion supporting the creation of a comprehensive plan to ensure community consultation!! As expected, Cr Humphrey tried to change things to suit himself, but was disappointed when sanity prevailed!! (Click here to read minutes, it starts on Pg 48)
  • 17/10 - Surf Coast Shire releases agenda for council meeting to discuss Pt Impossible, making an interesting concession that community consultation had not been undertaken (despite what Cr Humphrey had been asserting!!). (Click here to read more
  • 17/10 - Pressure builds on Cr Humphrey, as the Minister for Planning asks the councils to consult, and Cr Humphrey suggests a public meeting would suffice, only to say in the next breath that community consultation isn’t normally required by State govt anyway!! Wow!!! (Click here to read more)
  • 09/10 - One of the Victorian nudist forums had a suggestion for a beach cricket day at Pt Impossible, to be held 4/11, weather permitting. It intends to show that the nudists community is the same as beach users at other beaches, just with slightly less clothing!!
  • 07/10 - The Minister for Planning Rob Hulls has asked the councils to provide information showing what community and interest group consultation was completed, and what the councils have included in their “going forward” strategies regarding the beaches (Click here to read)
  • 27/09 - We received a letter from Ian Voigt at DSE indicating that the Minister for Planning (Rob Hulls) has been asked by all the councils responsible for all 4 Victorian beaches to either revoke or review the clothing optional status!! Nice to hear from the Government after all this time, not so nice to hear we could lose everything…
  • 19/09 - An extended article appeared in The Age today, “Life in the buff zone” which covers most of the issues in a balanced way. (Click here to read)
  • 12/09 - We locate audio of an interview with Cr Ron from the ABC Radio National breakfast program from 05/09 by accident, and discover an amazing array of emotive rhetoric and specious bluster, but nary a fact to be heard (true to form). Does Ron seriously think people are buying into his comments? The journo’s seem to be, only Fran Kelly (of ABC Radio National) got even remotely close to asking a probing question, but didn’t follow through… Click here to read
  • 08/09 - Cr Humphrey suddenly gets ill, is unable to attend council meeting and calls local news to let them know. Is still well enough to attend media committments in Melbourne (and we’re wondering if his council petrol allowance paid for that trip?) Click here to read
  • 05/09 - Cr Ron Humphrey appears on the ABC Radio National breakfast program with Fran Kelly, for a 2 minute spot on the beach issue, nudist community not notified or approached to reply (refer 12/09 above for more info)
  • 05/09 - Article appears in The Age (Click here to read) with a little more of Cr Humphrey’s rhetoric (I think we’ve heard that song before!), and some direct quotes from the police acknowledging our view of the issues (ie there have not been any sexual assaults, and inappropriate behaviour is everywhere). Still waiting for Cr Ron to actually present a real fact!!
  • 30/08 - Received a response from The Age, expressing some interest in pursuing the story. This indicates a level of interest greater than the regional papers (after all, as a story it does have everything - scandal, misuse of power, government, nudity - what more could a paper want!!)
  • 28/08 - Received confirmation from Geelong Advertiser that “inquiry” was based on a letter sent from the Department of Sustainability
  • 25/08 - Cr Humphrey appears in the media again, with lots more emotive rhetoric, and general bluff and bluster!! For further analysis, read the article and make up your own mind (Click to read)
  • 24/08 - Representatives from the Victorian nudist community plan on distributing information directly to beach users, primarily in the form of windscreen flyers. Details will include how top contact the Minister for Planning and register you opposition to the revocation of clothing optional status
  • 23/08 - More media coverage, with an article in the Geelong Advertiser. Cr Humphrey again suggesting that his “facts” are the real deal, and making the interesting statement that the inappropriate behaviour he’s been referring to was not on the beach but outside!!
  • 17/08 - Representatives of the Victorian Nudist Community (and this website) wrote an open letter to Cr Ron Humphrey, the Surf Coast Shire council, the Minister for Planning, and others, in response to Cr Humphrey’s motion. Read this post for a full description (Click here to read post and if you want to see the actual open letter, click here to read)
  • 17/08 - It seems Cr Humphrey is not actually popular in circles other than his dealings with our community. Another website has been tracking Cr Humphrey’s performance as a councillor, and has a number of interesting topics being discussed (most of them unflattering). For full detailsm, check out the website (Click here to read)
  • 24/07 - Article appears in The Age, title “Call to ban nirthday suit a bummer”, stating that Wyndham City Council (responsible for Campbell’s Cove) has applied for clothing optional status to be revoked to make way for a $2m tourist development. This was the very first time the Victorian Nudist community had heard anything about anything, and was a sign of things to come!!
