The Surf Coast Shire has officially released the summary outcome notes from the workshop held with stakeholders on 29 April. To summarise, the notes indicate:
- Statistical evidence of increased inappropriate behaviour would be required before additional police patrols could be justified.
- Work towards changing public mindset was required, since it appears that there have been instances of inappropriate behaviour that have gone unreported (we always recommend reporting any inappropriate behaviour, help the police keep our beach family friendly)
- The installation of a surveillance camera was suggested, but the costs of installation and monitoring would need to be assessed further
- Additional brushing could be used around the dunes to reduce erosion and prevent unauthorised foot traffic through the dunes. Brush matting has been proven to work well in the past in rehabilitating dunes damaged by people
- Esatblish a “Friends of Point Impossible Beach” group to get the greater community more involved in preserving the beach
- Improvements to the carpark including additional signage may be required, and additional signage in general to better delineate the beach from other areas (particularly in light of the new dig regulations)

Another meeting of the working group is scheduled for October, to address these ideas (and collate the various costs/efforts/participants before the next summer season commences)

“Nudism push: Go mandatory”

In an article in the Geelong Independent, ANF rep Werner Jacob indicated that many of the issues associated with Point Impossible may be avoided if the beach was a “nude” beach, and not “clothing optional” - apparently the “optional” option introduces allows clothed beach users to “perv” on nude users.

This idea is interesting, it would make the beach more akin to nude beaches in Europe, where there is no “optional” option. While European beaches probably have issues of their own, nudism is much more openly accepted in Europe and participation is much higher than in Australia, particularly for families and couples. Australia could learn a lot from the European approach to nudism, they’ve been participating much longer than we have!!

Not everyone pleased with cameras?

It would appear that putting a camera in the carpark at Point Impossible to deter inappropriate behaviour around the carpark and toilets does not please everyone!! According to this article in the Geelong Independent (”Liberties leader slams ’spy’ plan” - Click here), the idea has been labelled “unjustifiable and intrusive”.

Read the article and form your own opinion - we’re pleased that there’s discussion about the wider issues that affect the larger community.

And more media…

This article (”Spy cams to snap sex on the beach”) scanned from the Geelong Advertiser is the latest installment in the Point Impossible discussion - Click here

Much of the content of this Geelong Advertiser article itself is pretty much on topic (thanks Aleks!), but who’s in charge of titles and picking the photos at the Addy? Then again, a photo and title like that will hopefully make people read the article, which does highlight a couple of interesting points:
- For the first time, it has been acknowledged that problems exist on ALL beaches, and that measures being considered for Point Impossible apply equally at other locations
- The problems associated with the nude beach appear isolated to the carpark and the dunes areas (which nudists have always known!)

Have a read of the article - if you’re familiar with the reporting style last year, you’ll notice a subtle change in focus - nudists are not the cause of the problems, and as a community we want to help improve the beach for everyone to enjoy - report anything inappropriate to the police, just like you would on any beach!!
